CONNECTING CULTURES: “Sensing the North”
By Gaëlle Sundelin
For two days, the Ras al Ain Art Gallery has hosted the first edition of the exhibition “Sensing the North”. This joint initiative by the Nordic embassies and Jordanian organisations brought together the main features of each country to highlight the common values between them. From presentations on Finnish design to Norwegian folksongs by famous Sigrid Moldestad Trio and Icelandic knitting, various activities gave a deeper insight into Nordic culture and its specificities. Three “sensing rooms” had been arranged as well, allowing the visitors to ride a bike in Denmark, experience the Nordic winter setting and have coffee in a typical Swedish living room.
The well-furnished program also focused on existing cooperation between Nordic countries and Jordan with musical initiatives such as Mamma Mia- ABBA Nostalgia with “Dozan wa Awtar”, poetry reading in Arabic of a Swedish Nobel Laureate and the performance by Danish DJ Morten Fernando and Palestinian rapper VENUS. A book presentation and roundtable on the Danish/Arabic anthology about the Arab Spring gave the visitors the opportunity to gather around common questions and concerns. Children were not forsaken with puppet shows, book readings by Ms Rabeea Al Nasser and an own Lego and drawing room.
You’ve missed it? Here is your chance to experience the greatest highlight in Nordic summer: Midsummer. This event celebrating the lightest day of the year will be the occasion to gather around the Midsummer maypole, dance, sing, share food and laughters. Arranged by the Jordanian Scandinavian Friendship Association, the Midsummer celebration will start around 12.00 on June the 22nd, in the Scandinavian Forest (on the way to Jerash). Bring some snacks, drinks and your good mood!
